The Basic Rules of Pickleball
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It can be played as singles or doubles on a badminton-sized court.
1. The Court and Equipment
Court: The court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, the same size as a doubles badminton court. A 36-inch high net divides it in half.
The "Kitchen": This is the 7-foot area on both sides of the net, also called the Non-Volley Zone (NVZ). You cannot volley the ball (hit it in the air) while standing in this zone.
Paddle: A solid paddle, larger than a ping-pong paddle but smaller than a tennis racket.
Ball: A lightweight plastic ball with holes, similar to a wiffle ball.
2. Serving
How to Serve: The serve must be made underhand, with contact below your waist (specifically, below your navel). The paddle must move in an upward arc.
Position: The server must stand behind the baseline. The serve is made diagonally to the opposite service court.
Foot Fault: At least one foot must be behind the baseline, and neither foot can touch the court or the baseline until after the ball is struck.
Scoring: In doubles, only the serving team can score points. The server continues to serve, switching service courts after each point, until they fault. Then, the serve moves to the second player on the same team (this is called the "first server" exception). After both players on the first team have lost their serve, the serve goes to the other team.
The score is called out as three numbers: Server's Score - Receiver's Score - Server Number (e.g., "5-3-1" means the serving team has 5 points, the receiving team has 3, and it's the first server).
3. The Two-Bounce Rule (The Double-Bounce Rule)
This is a fundamental rule that creates longer rallies.
After the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once before returning it.
Then, the serving team must also let the return bounce once before hitting it.
After these two bounces (one on each side), players can either volley the ball (hit it in the air) or play it off the bounce.
4. The Non-Volley Zone (The Kitchen)
You cannot volley the ball (hit it out of the air) while you are standing inside the Non-Volley Zone.
You can enter the kitchen to hit a ball that has bounced.
It is a fault if your momentum causes you to touch the kitchen line or the kitchen area during or after a volley.
5. Faults
A fault is any action that stops play. A fault by the serving team results in a side-out or loss of serve. A fault by the receiving team results in a point for the serving team.
Common faults include:
Hitting the ball out of bounds.
Not clearing the net.
Violating the two-bounce rule.
Volleying the ball from within the Non-Volley Zone (the kitchen).
A serve that lands in the Non-Volley Zone (the kitchen) or on its line.
6. Scoring the Game
A standard game is usually played to 11 points.
You must win by 2 points.
